Drew Friend started this movement with the idea of donating his birthday gifts from
his 5th birthday party to a family who would enjoy some new toys. However, his
small idea exploded into something much larger, with the help of so many, here and
Above. Drew's mom, Shannon, found the particular family needed more than what
one little boy's birthday party could do. The gauntlet was thrown down; the
challenge was presented.
Always up for a challenge, the Friends worked their network of friends, family, and
Angels, asking them for anything. This family needed everything: from beds to
brakes for their car. By that same afternoon, the Friends had beds, clothes, shoes,
blankets and car maintenance on the way! As Pastor Joel, pastor of Royal
Redeemer Lutheran Church and home to Drew's preschool, pointed out, "When the
idea comes together and grows so quickly and so easily, there are Great things at
work."
Soon thereafter, Drew's cause received more beds, more couches, appliances,
etc., than one family could use. Through more phone calls, the Friends were unable
to find a center to send people wanting to donate big items. Since no alternatives
were found, the Friends decided to create their own way to donate, knowing there
must be other families who could benefit. Hence, the formation of Drew's Big Give.
The Friends often get asked, "When will you stop taking donations?" Shannon
Friend, Drew's mom, responds, "I will do this until...Until there is no more to give or
until there is no more needed."
To date, Drew's Big Give has been able to help 5 families directly. From paying bills
to furnishing homes. Indirectly, Shannon likes to believe Drew's small idea has been
able to renew faith in prayer, humanity, God, and each other, inspiring so many
more.
